  59. <span id="index-_0023sccs"></span>
  60. <p>The &lsquo;<samp>#ident</samp>&rsquo; directive takes one argument, a string constant. On
  61. some systems, that string constant is copied into a special segment of
  62. the object file. On other systems, the directive is ignored. The
  63. &lsquo;<samp>#sccs</samp>&rsquo; directive is a synonym for &lsquo;<samp>#ident</samp>&rsquo;.
  64. </p>
  65. <p>These directives are not part of the C standard, but they are not
  66. official GNU extensions either. What historical information we have
  67. been able to find, suggests they originated with System V.
  68. </p>
  69. <span id="index-null-directive"></span>
  70. <p>The <em>null directive</em> consists of a &lsquo;<samp>#</samp>&rsquo; followed by a newline,
  71. with only whitespace (including comments) in between. A null directive
  72. is understood as a preprocessing directive but has no effect on the
  73. preprocessor output. The primary significance of the existence of the
  74. null directive is that an input line consisting of just a &lsquo;<samp>#</samp>&rsquo; will
  75. produce no output, rather than a line of output containing just a
  76. &lsquo;<samp>#</samp>&rsquo;. Supposedly some old C programs contain such lines.
